In anticipation of the possibility of resuming negotiations on the nuclear deal with Iran, the Reuters news agency reported last night (Friday) that uranium residues were discovered at two nuclear facilities in Iran during a surprise inspection carried out by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in August and September this year.

Although the facilities have been inactive for two decades, the presence of uranium remains and the fact that the Iranians have not provided an adequate explanation for this, reinforces the claims of Israel and other countries that Tehran continues to develop nuclear capabilities under the radar. An Iranian official told Reuters: “We have nothing to hide, so we allowed inspectors to visit those sites.”

The IAEA is now considering condemning Iran, which could be an obstacle to efforts to renew diplomatic relations with the United States and renew the nuclear deal, from which former US President Donald Trump resigned.

Raphael Grossi, chairman of the International Atomic Energy Agency, will visit Tehran tomorrow and meet with senior government officials. “Tomorrow I will travel to Tehran to meet with senior Iranian government officials and find an agreed solution that fits Iranian law so that the IAEA can continue its vital activities in Iran,” he wrote. Grossi on Twitter. “Looking forward to success, it’s everyone’s interest.”

Iran has set a deadline for President Biden until next week to remove the sanctions imposed by his predecessor as Trump. If Biden refuses to do so, Iran will no longer allow IAEA agents to visit nuclear sites. Article link https://www.news1.news/news/2021/02/uranium-remains-were-found-at-two-nuclear-sites-in-iran.html

The International Atomic Energy Agency is expected to publish a quarterly report on Iran’s nuclear activities next week.
