Russian court reduces Navalni imprisonment – with …

A court in Moscow has upheld the prison sentence of 44-year-old Kremlin critic Alexej Navalni on appeal. His sentence was reduced by a month and a half.

Navalni was convicted in early February for allegedly violating the conditions for his release after a previous conviction during his five-month stay in Germany. There, he recovered from a novichok poisoning, who is assigned to Russian secret agents. Opponents called the process politically motivated.

A judge then imposed a 3.5-year prison sentence on Navalni. His lawyers have already indicated that an earlier house arrest would be deducted from the sentence, leaving the government critic in jail for 2 years and 8 months.

An appeal court on Saturday confirmed Navalni’s imprisonment, but shortened it by a month and a half. Navalni would be transferred to a prison next week, Russian state media reported, but an exact date is not stated.
