The Halle-Vilvoorde public prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation into Member of Parliament Dries Van Langenhove, elected on a list of Vlaams Belang. He went to Paris on Saturday to take part in a rally against the possible dissolution of the extreme right-wing movement Génération Identitaire. Minister of the Interior Annelies Verlinden (CD&V) had previously called that trip non-essential.

The trip would be against the corona measures, as non-essential travel is still prohibited to prevent the spread of the corona virus. Van Langenhove himself called the trip essential, referring to his duties as a representative of the people. Chairman of Vlaams Belang Tom Van Greeks defended his MP.

The public prosecutor’s office of Halle-Vilvoorde has announced that it has now launched its own investigation, since Van Langenhove lives in that judicial district. It will therefore draw up an official report, said press magistrate Carol Vercarre. She could not communicate about the possible punishment: “It is too early for that,” said Vercarre. Normally, violation of the measure for non-essential travel carries a fine of 250 euros.
