PSV is in danger of losing star players

PSV is struggling on the field to keep the performance constant. That is already a drama for the people of Eindhoven in terms of sports, but it can also have far-reaching consequences in the financial field. Article link

The Brabant top club invested a lot of money in the player group this summer, making Champions League football a requirement to cover the costs. If that doesn’t happen, star players have to be sold.

PSV’s current season is one with two faces. With the appointment of German trainer Roger Schmidt, the Eindhoven team wanted to take a new path with fresh and attacking football, but after more than six months have not yet gotten rid of their image as a counter team. Article link

The Brabant top team has difficulty in finding the gaps in the defense in possession and is at the same time itself defensively unstable, which caused problems for Schmidt’s team, especially against the top teams in the Eredivisie and the Europa League. Problems that, if not resolved quickly, can have far-reaching consequences for the future prospects of the Brabant top club.

At the beginning of the current football year, the people of Eindhoven did not hide their ambitions. There would have to be a fight for the national championship again, for the first time in eight years, at least the half final battle of the KNVB Cup should be reached and the club wanted to survive in the Europa League. This extensive objective, which arose from the lack of priorities of various competitions, meant, among other things, that Schmidt had to implement his (remarkable) exchange policy in order to often be able to play with the strongest line-up.

In fact, PSV seemed on its way to a top year before Super January. Article link

The team from Eindhoven had a strong phase towards the winter break, which meant that the points deficit against Ajax decreased and the team from Eindhoven were able to take over the lead from the title competitor in the mutual duel in the Johan Cruijff ArenA. Article link

The given away 2-0 lead and the subsequent draw turned out to be the starting shot for an Eredivisie dip for the Eindhoven team, with the last draw against low flyer ADO Den Haag as the absolute low point.

By sharing the points last week (2-2, ed.) PSV gave the team from Amsterdam the opportunity to make the lead even bigger than before the strong phase of the Eindhoven team. Should Ajax win the catch-up match against FC Utrecht, the team from Amsterdam will already take an advance on the national championship with a lead of nine points. PSV’s only hope for a surprise can draw from the upcoming mutual match, which is scheduled for 28 February. If the three points are not taken in the Philips Stadium and Ajax, just like in the other top matches, if Ajax leaves few points, PSV can forget first place. Schmidt’s team will have to do everything in their power to take second place, which entitles them to participate in the preliminary round of the Champions League.

Champions League budget

That is extra sour for PSV because the club bought in at the beginning of this season on the basis of a Champions League ticket. Among other things, the Eindhoven team put nine million euros on the table to take over Ibrahim Sangaré from Toulouse, the club paid six million euros to sign Philipp Max (Augsburg) and the Brabant top club submitted million-dollar contracts to Eran Zahavi and Mario Götze to take them to the Philips Stadium. In a sense that was also a necessity to bridge the gap with Ajax, but on the other hand, the Eindhoven team also took an enormous risk.

Especially with the corona crisis in mind, which had been present for a long time at the beginning of this season, the club is already missing out on a lot of match day revenues. Article link

The club hibernated in the Europa League, but that does not cover the costs that the club made last summer. Article link

The starter premium in the Champions League – this season good for more than 15 million euros – could in any case cover the higher salaries.

When PSV finishes second through the competition and the team from Eindhoven does not manage to get into the main tournament of the Champions League, a major problem will follow. Article link

The Europa League starting premium was five times (!) Less than the Champions League premium this year: 2.92 million euros. That is said to be not even enough to pay Mario Götze for a year, let alone continue to pay for the high salaries of other purchases and the current star players of the Eindhoven residents.

In fact, the moment PSV is unable to qualify for next season’s Champions League, it will only become more difficult for the Eindhoven team to connect with Ajax in the long term. As a (possible) national champion, the Amsterdammer insures the Champions League millions, while PSV then has to make ends meet to get a round budget at all with the player material and the corresponding salaries that it has since this season. As a result, missing the Billionaire ball is almost the same as selling players.

With those outgoing transfers, PSV is of little use to touch a few tons or one or two million euros. Then the Eindhoven residents need a hit to be able to continue to pay at the same level as they do at the moment, which means that it will have to get rid of one of the star players in order to remain financially at the same level. That is not only a blow for the group of players, but also for the ambitions of the people of Eindhoven. For that money it cannot get a better / different alternative because a large part of the income goes to the club instead of being reinvested directly in the player group. If the group stage of the Champions League is missed, players such as Donyell Malen, Cody Gakpo – if fit – and even Mario Götze will be placed in the window.

PSV will also determine in the coming period what to do with players with an expiring contract in 2022. Denzell Dumfries has already indicated that he does not want to extend his contract and will be sold next summer and Mohamed Ihattaren is also going to hook up or drop out. However, the future of the 19-year-old top talent and PSV stars is more in their own hands than ever. However, the leadership of the Eindhoven team can also give priority to the Eredivisie; after the lost match in Greece (4-2 to Olympiakos, ed.) the starting point in the Europa League is a lot less than in the national league.

POLL: In which position will PSV finish in the Eredivisie?
