North Holland and Groningen suffer the most from the corona crisis

This is evident from figures from Statistics Netherlands (CBS). Statistics Netherlands previously reported that the economy of the Netherlands shrank by 3.8 percent over the entire year. That is the largest contraction that Statistics Netherlands has ever measured.

Flevoland best due to crisis

It has now become apparent that there are major regional differences. North Holland, Groningen and Limburg suffer the most from the consequences of the crisis. Of all provinces, Flevoland, with a contraction of 2 percent, is the best through the crisis.

North Holland was mainly affected by much less air traffic at Schiphol and less tourism. Article link

The decrease in Groningen is mainly due to declining gas extraction and is therefore less related to corona. In most provinces the contraction was around 3 percent.

Haarlemmermeer hit hard

At a regional level, Haarlemmermeer, where Schiphol is located, was hit hard with a shrinkage of about 18 percent. Amsterdam, where a lot of tourism was lost, also fared poorly with a contraction of about 7 percent. Article link

The region around Delfzijl only shrank by 1 percent and thus performed the best in the Netherlands.

Relatively good

The corona crisis has therefore hit hard in the past year. Nevertheless, compared to other European countries, the Netherlands has come off relatively well in 2020. In the eurozone, the economy shrank by 6.8 percent in 2020, the European statistics agency Eurostat recently reported. These are provisional figures, just like with Statistics Netherlands.
