oil pollution

Israel is looking for the ship responsible for a major oil spill, which has led the country to close all beaches along the Mediterranean.

Sticky lumps and clumps of tar washed ashore on an estimated 170 of the 190 kilometers of coast last weekend, probably the result of an oil spill on a ship a few dozen kilometers off the coast. It is still unclear whether it concerns residues of crude oil or fuel oil that ships use.

Environment Minister Gila Gamliel said an investigation is underway into nine ships believed to have been in the region at the time of the spill. According to her, there is ‘a more than reasonable chance’ that the ship in question can be identified. Article link

The spill probably occurred last week and a winter storm blew the gunk towards the coast over the weekend.

The first sign that something was wrong was the washing up of a 17-meter-long fin whale that appeared to have ingested oil. Environmental organizations speak of a disaster, the consequences of which will be felt for months and possibly even years. If the culprit is found, Israel wants to recover the costs of the pollution from the ship’s owner.
