Cypriot association intervenes: ‘Walem flies out after relegation in Nations League’

Johan Walem would no longer be the national coach of Cyprus. According to John Leonidou, the Cypriot correspondent for UEFA, our fellow countryman has been kicked out. That would not be a total surprise.

Leonidou refers to a decision by the Cypriot Football Association, but nothing about it can be found on its website. Still, the decision would have been made: Walem can no longer call himself national coach. However, he was only at the sporting helm of the country since January 2020. However, the results were disappointing.

Under Walem’s rule, Cyprus lost six of its past eight international matches. In the Nations League C Division, it took an embarrassing four out of eighteen, finishing last in its pool. That meant relegation to division D, the lowest level in that league … Apparently the Cypriot federation has decided that it does not see a better future with Walem.

For our fellow countryman it was his very first assignment as national coach of an A-team. He previously fulfilled that role with the Belgian U21s. Walem was also under contract with KV Kortrijk in the past.
