The ministry fears that this is a highly contagious variant of bird flu.

A spokeswoman for the affected laying hen company speaks of ‘a terrible drama’. “We have no idea where this is coming from.” Article link

The chickens were gassed on Saturday morning and taken to the Rendac rendering plant in Son.

There are two other poultry farms within a radius of one kilometer around the company. In order to prevent the virus from spreading, the animals on these two farms are also culled.

About 35,000 animals were involved on the infected farm. Article link

The other two farms contain approximately 50,000 and 47,000 animals. Article link

The culls are carried out by the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA).

There are seven other poultry farms within a radius of three kilometers around the infected farm in Sint-Oedenrode. “These companies are being sampled and screened for avian flu,” said a spokesman for the ministry.

Minister Carola Schouten has immediately declared a transport ban for poultry farms in a zone of 10 kilometers around the company in Sint-Oedenrode, where there are 26 other poultry farms. This transport ban applies to poultry, eggs, poultry manure and used bedding, but also to other animals and animal products from farms with ‘commercially kept poultry’.
