This discovery could indicate the presence of life on Mars.
The information was obtained from the experts of the NASA during this week.
The researchers asked for additional data from Curiosity to conduct new experiments in order to confirm the findings. According to forecasts, the next data from rover they will arrive on Monday.
According to the New York Times, the discovered gas may have formed recently, as in the rarefied Martian atmosphere the methane molecules decompose over several centuries under the action of sunlight and during chemical reactions.
The researchers also do not rule out that the discovered gas could have been stored within the planet for millions of years and has only now reached the surface passing through the cracks.
