(September 4, 2020) A hitch in Trek-Segafredo’s Giro preparation. Giulio Ciccone has tested positive for the corona virus and for that reason cannot start in the Tirreno-Adriatico.

The 25-year-old Italian tested positive on August 31, according to his team, in preparation for the Tirreno, where everyone must submit a negative corona test at the start. According to Trek-Segafredo, Ciccone had the last contact with his teammates at the Italian road championship on August 23. There, the corona rules would have been strictly observed.

How Ciccone contracted the virus is unknown. As a precaution, the team has tested all riders with whom Ciccone has been in contact. All results turned out to be negative. Ciccone counts for the Giro d’Italia as super servant of Vincenzo Nibali, who wants to win the Giro this year. The Tirreno is seen as a very important preparatory race for the Tour of Italy, which starts on October 3.

Ciulio Ciccone can resume training for the rest of the season. Because he tested positive for the corona virus, he was not allowed to start in the Tirreno-Adriatico. Meanwhile, his Trek-Segafredo team reports in a press release that he has undergone two negative tests and can resume his training. “After more than fourteen days of isolation, Ciccone can now concentrate on restoring his shape for the rest of the season.”

Now that the Italian has missed a large part of the preparation, the question is where he will still be used. He was originally supposed to ride the Giro d’Italia, but it starts on October 3. “In consultation with Ciccone and the team’s medical staff, management will decide in which races he will continue this season.”
