The Zuidplein Theater was festively opened by Queen Máxima on Wednesday morning. The Queen took a look in the theaters, after which she unveiled a plaque officially opening the theater.
The Queen was given a tour of the new theater by theater director Emmelien Matthijsse. “We showed the Queen all aspects of our theater. From theater performances to our training project Lab Z.”
Theater maker Barbara Willemsen takes part in Lab Z. She thought it was great that Queen Máxima showed a lot of interest in what the theater makers discussed. “She really kept asking about what we are making. That showed a great commitment. With my new performance I try to convey a connection through the theater. She then nodded in agreement.”
The party was somewhat limited by the measures surrounding the corona virus, but according to Matthijsse, the design of the opening was nevertheless successful. “We wanted to open with everyone who made this new theater possible. That was a bit different now, but no less successful. We now have four opening moments of which this was the official opening.”
Theater hopes to become an important factor in South Rotterdam. “We want to be a cultural hotspot”, Mathijsse explains the theater’s ambition.
“The old theater was only open for performances, the new house is open all day. We want to organize more debates in which people really engage in conversation. We hope that people will find common ground here.”
