Lionel Messi helped FC Barcelona to victory on Wednesday evening in a friendly game with Girona. The Argentinian scored twice in the home game won 3-1.
Philippe Coutinho opened the score for Barcelona in the twentieth minute in the Estadi Johan Cruyff, the stadium of the reserves and the women’s team. The Brazilian completed a nice attack from close range on the instructions of Trincão.
Just before half time, Messi made his first goal under trainer Ronald Koeman. The attacker, who decided to stay with Barcelona despite an explicit wish to leave, found the net with a beautiful shot from the edge of the sixteen-meter area, which fell through the post.
Shortly after the interruption, Girona came back into the game via a goal from Samuel Sáiz, with Messi setting the final score a few minutes later. This time he fired the ball from the edge of the penalty area into the right corner.
Frenkie de Jong had, just like Messi, a base place at Barcelona. The Orange International and the six-time World Footballer of the Year were both replaced after just over an hour.

Suárez, Vidal and Umtiti are missing again
Koeman also decided not to use Luis Suárez, Arturo Vidal and Samuel Umtiti in his second match. The trio is reportedly allowed to leave Barcelona.
For Koeman, the meeting with Girona was his second exhibition game as coach of Barcelona. Last Saturday, the Catalans also won 3-1 against Gimnàstic de Tarragona, which plays in the Segunda División B.
The new season in La Liga started last weekend, but Barcelona does not have to take action for the first time in a week and a half. Koeman’s team starts the competition on September 27 with a home game against Villarreal.
