In 2019, the Google Pixel 3a and Pixel 3a XL were the first phones the company used to test this strategy, and Google recognized it should try again in 2020. That aside, we’ve only seen a Google Pixel 4a, and there’s no oversized model for those looking for a bigger screen. Then why is there no Google Pixel 4a XL? A Google spokesperson tells TechRadar, “With no bezels on the display, we can now fit more display into a compact form factor.”
“We think 5.8 inches is the perfect size for our Pixel 4a customer. The screen size has increased by 4.5%, while the overall device size has decreased by 5.8%, with a more polished industrial design.
What does this mean?
So you should not expect a Google Pixel 4a XL to debut later this year. The rumors originally suggested that a larger variant of the phone would be available, but over time, with each new rumor, that hope disappeared like snow in the sun.
Maybe Google has experimented with the idea of a Pixel 4a XL. In the statement above, the company makes good reasoning as to why it didn’t want to make two different sizes of devices before 2020.
What the statement does not make clear is that this is the first phone from Google to have an all-display front.
Even the Pixel 4, which has clipped the black bars on the top and bottom of the Pixel phones, has a larger top bar than the Pixel 4a to house the front camera.
For the Pixel 4a, the company has included a punch-hole camera in the top left corner of the display. This allows the screen to be stretched further upwards and gives it a larger screen, without having to enlarge the body of the phone.
Does this also mean that we may only see one model of the Google Pixel 5? That’s unclear at this point, but if the company doesn’t believe there’s a market for a larger Pixel 4a, it may be making a similar choice for the XL series in the Pixel 5 as well.
