Of course Max Verstappen knows all too well that Mercedes has a much faster car than he, but the Red Bull Racing driver emphasizes on Thursday in the run-up to the second Grand Prix at Silverstone that this does not change his motivation.
“I don’t understand why people think I’m very frustrated,” said Verstappen at his press conference for the GP of the seventieth anniversary of Formula 1. “Because I’m not in a frustrating position. I think a lot of drivers in my car would like to sit. ”
Mercedes drivers Lewis Hamilton (three wins) and Valtteri Bottas (one win) are also in Formula 1 this season. The gap with the rest, with Red Bull in front, seems to have grown even bigger, witness the difference of more then a second between Hamilton and Verstappen last weekend in qualifying for the Grand Prix of Great Britain.
“Mercedes has just made a fantastic car, you have to respect that,” said Verstappen, who finished second twice and third third this year. “I have the situation that Mercedes has been accepted more quickly.”
“But of course I still try to make the most of it and take every opportunity I get with both hands. And of course we will continue to do everything we can to improve the car. I can fight for podium places anyway, that’s better. then drive in the last place. ”
‘Higher temperatures don’t give us a second’
A clue for Red Bull is that this weekend promises to be a lot warmer than last week. Mercedes normally has more problems with heat than the Verstappen team.
“It might help a bit, but it will not save us a second of time,” said the 22-year-old Dutchman with a smile. “But I don’t give up.”
