VeeKay has ‘very good first day’ at Indy, Alonso fifth

Rinus ‘VeeKay’ van Kalmthout has had a ‘very good first day’ at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in preparation for the Indy 500. The Dutchman eventually finished sixteenth. James Hinchcliffe was the fastest, Fernando Alonso finished fifth.

VeeKay took 40: 529 seconds on the lap of two and a half miles on the famous American circuit, although Indycar is ovals especially looking at the speed in miles over a lap. That was 222,061 for VeeKay, or more than 357 kilometers per hour. Fastest man Hinchcliffe took the 224,526.

“I had a very good first day,” said VeeKay, who plays for Ed Carpenter Racing. “I built it up slowly, but we had plenty of time. Especially when I was driving alone, my car was very good. ”

The latter is important, because where everyone can take to the track during practice and drivers drive a lot in traffic, qualifying will be completed this weekend by letting the drivers do their laps one-by-one.

“It could be even better in traffic”, admits VeeKay, “although we have already taken good steps and I have a lot of confidence for the coming days”, says the driver who meanwhile rookie orientation (a kind of introduction for newcomers) has successfully completed Wednesday.

Alonso

Two-time Formula 1 world champion Alonso finished in fifth place, as said. “It was a good day. A day without problems, exactly what we wanted, ”says Alonso. He competes for McLaren in ‘the 500’, for which he did not qualify last year, but in 2017 rookie of the year became.

Thursday and Friday there will be more training sessions at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The qualifying session on Saturday can be seen on Ziggo Sport Racing from 9:00 PM Dutch time, that on Sunday from 7:00 PM. The race is the following week, Sunday 23 August.
