Robin van Persie returned to Feyenoord in 2018 and ended his career in Rotterdam a year and a half later. Despite the now 36-year-old former attacker eager to return to his childhood sweetheart, negotiations for a commitment were not easy. In an interview with Van Persie Heroes Magazine that Feyenoord initially only wanted to offer him a four-month contract.
Van Persie and his wife Bouchra gave an extensive interview to the magazine. “Robin got a little sidetracked in Turkey that last season. During that period, he was often talking to trainer Giovanni van Bronckhorst. He didn’t tell me exactly what he wanted, just yelled, “I spoke to Gio again.” That was his way of fathoming me. After a few times I said: I think you just want to go back to Feyenoord, just do it, what have you got to lose? ”Says Van Persie’s wife. The all-time top scorer of Orange played little in his last months in the service of Fenerbahçe.
“Correct, but I only found the deal that Feyenoord presented to me a bit scanty,” replies Van Persie. “I’m not talking about money at all. Even if they had given me a fruit basket, I would have come too. I just wanted more time, because I had played little at Fenerbahçe, had to come from far. All I asked technical director Martin van Geel for was a year and a half contract, but I could only get a four-month contract, so for the rest of that season. ”
Van Persie indicates that he was unsure whether to return. “I thought: if I catch something in those four months, it will be over immediately and I will not end my career with a positive feeling. I felt so many doubts. Bouch then spoke to me, ”says Van Persie. He says that Van Geel ‘got through it for a year and a half’. “Bizarre of course. Fortunately things went well in those four months. We won the cup. It went so well that Feyenoord asked if I would please stay another year. That is how my career ended as I had hoped. ”
Van Persie, who previously wore the shirt of Arsenal, Manchester United and Fenerbahçe, eventually played for the Rotterdam team for another year and a half, in which he scored 25 goals and 6 assists in 46 games. In the last period of his career at Feyenoord, the 102-time Orange international still confiscated the TOTO KNVB Beker and Johan Cruijff Schaal.
