The Knesset Speaker’s Office stated in response that “security arrangements are determined by the GSS and the Knesset Speaker does not interfere in them.”
The Speaker of the Knesset is one of the symbols of the government in Israel, and he must be secured by law. In addition, the Prime Minister, the Minister of Defense, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the President of the State, the President of the Supreme Court and the opposition must be secure for the same reason. The possibility of removing the security from him but his request was denied.
It was also recently reported that the head of the opposition, MK Yair Lapid, also asked for the GSS security to be removed from him, and he even refrained from passing them a schedule in an orderly manner and evading the security guards when he leaves the house. Lapid turned to the GSS, the request was forwarded to the Ministerial Committee on GSS Affairs, headed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, but it was not approved.
Levin was elected to office in May, just before the formation of the unity government led by Netanyahu and Bnei Gantz, after Blue and White vetoed the continued tenure of former Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein. Hold the vote for its replacement within a few hours. The Likud decided that Levin would fill the position in his place.
