In the period between July 28 and August 3, an average of 550.3 people per day in Belgium became infected with the corona virus. This means the average number of infections at the highest level since the end of April.
This is evident from the daily update of the health institute Sciensano. This is an increase of 46 percent on a weekly basis, and it is also an increase compared to the weekly average reported on Thursday. It has been since the end of April that the seven-day average was still above 550 new infections. The increase is less pronounced than a week ago.
During the same period, an average of 24.6 corona patients were hospitalized, an increase of 31 percent over the previous week. That is much less than during the first peak. The number of new admissions has now reached the level of around 8 June. An average of 2.6 people die from Covid-19 every day. That figure remains stable. More than 60 patients now reside in the intensive care units of the Belgian hospitals, which had not happened since mid-June.
In total, at least 72,016 people in Belgium have already become infected with the corona virus. 9,861 patients died from the effects of the disease and 18,387 people had to be hospitalized.
Sciensano will give an explanation of the new figures this afternoon.
