Marvel’s Avengers will be released on September 4 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, and will move on to the next-gen afterwards. In the game you will be able to play with all the popular heroes from the successful film series: Captain America, Iron Man, The Hulk, Thor,… At least if you have a PlayStation, because the developers of Crystal Dynamics announced yesterday that Spider-man the PlayStation version will be available as dlc.
Sony, publisher of the PlayStation, bought the Spider-man usage rights from Marvel in 1999. So they basically give Sony the power to keep the superhero exclusively for its console. Marvel’s Spiderman, which was released in 2018, was also an exclusive game for PlayStation 4. This game was also released by Square Enix, a game studio best known for the Final Fantasy games.
Fuss on social media
Exclusive gamers are no longer exceptional, but the fact that characters in a game that comes out on different platforms are exclusive to a particular console is at most exceptional. In the past, Spider-man games also appeared regularly on other consoles, so Sony hasn’t always been so greedy.
Crystal Dynamics’ decision not to add Spider-man for the Xbox One and PC sparked a lot of disappointed and angry reactions from gamers of those platforms on social media. But even PlayStation gamers don’t seem to support the decision. It is already expected that the exclusivity around Spider-man may have negative consequences on the sales of the game. Especially Xbox and PC gamers may drop out. The developer also announced that the Hawkeye character will be added after launch, which will work across all consoles.
