Iván Sosa started as one of the top favorites at the Tour of Burgos, but the Colombian climber was able to forget a third consecutive victory after the first mountain stage to the Picón Blanco. However, Sosa took revenge on the flanks of Lagunas de Neila.
The promising rider of Team Ineos managed to parry a few gears of Mikel Landa in the ultimate final and started the last kilometer together with the Spaniard and leader Remco Evenepoel. Sosa eventually managed to drive away from his competitors with a perfectly timed demarrage and to climb to the stage victory.
“I knew the finish very well,” said 22-year-old Sosa in the flash interview afterwards. The mountain goat already won in 2018 and 2019 at Lagunas de Neila. “I knew I had to wait until the end. I really drove to my limit, but we were all smashed up, ”said Sosa, who recorded his first win of the season in Northern Spain.
“The goal was actually to win the Tour of Burgos for a third time, but we are now leaving the round with a stage victory.” Richard Carapaz, a teammate of Sosa, finished sixth in the final classification after five days of racing. Remco Evenepoel can call himself the new winner of the Tour of Burgos.
