Sixteen employees of Beirut harbor detained after explosion

Eighteen employees of the port of Beirut were called for questioning, sixteen of whom are now in custody pending further investigation. These are port and customs officers, maintenance workers and their managers.

Lebanon’s Foreign Minister said on French radio today that a commission of inquiry had been given four days to determine responsibility for the blast.

Initial findings indicate that the explosion was caused by a fire detonating 2,750 tons of stored ammonium nitrate in a warehouse in the port of Beirut.
