Scoring Memphis eliminates Juventus with Lyon in the eighth finals CL | NOW

Olympique Lyon reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League on Friday, partly thanks to a hit by Memphis Depay. The French club lost 2-1 in Turin, but that was enough for a place in the last eight after the 1-0 victory in Lyon at the end of February.

Memphis scored from a penalty kick. He beat Juventus goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny with a ‘panenka’ and quickly put Lyon on a 0-1 lead. Just before half time, Cristiano Ronaldo also used a penalty kick (1-1) and in the second half the Portuguese shot the 1-2 in a nice way. Juventus, with Matthijs de Ligt in the field for ninety minutes, needed another goal to continue, but it failed to materialize.

Manchester City, which won 2-1 against Real Madrid on Friday, also survived the eighth finals and the English club is the opponent of Lyon in the next round. That quarter-final is about a match that will be played on Saturday, August 15, in an empty stadium in Lisbon.

The quarter-final place in Lyon is bad news for Ajax. The team from Amsterdam are immediately qualified for the main tournament of next season’s Champions League, unless Lyon or Napoli (those clubs did not get a CL ticket via the competition) wins the tournament. Napoli will play against FC Barcelona in the eighth finals in Camp Nou on Saturday, after the first leg in Italy ended in 1-1.

Penalty Juventus na hands Memphis

The game with Juventus was Memphis’s second official game, after he suffered a serious cruciate ligament injury in December and recovered quickly. He already played the final of the Coupe de la Ligue with Lyon against Paris Saint-Germain (0-0 and loss after penalties), after which he was again accurate in the Allianz Arena for the first time.

The ball hit the spot after 12 minutes, although Juventus’s Rodrigo Bentancur appeared to be sliding on Houssem Aouar. Face to face with keeper Szczesny, Memphis remained extremely cool and scored with a ‘panenka’.

Juventus knew at that time that it had to score three times to continue, with the result that the team of trainer Maurizio Sarri insisted. Ronaldo headed over and Federico Bernardeschi also missed an opportunity. Yet the 1-1 still fell before half time and Memphis had an unfortunate role to play.

The Orange-international received a free kick from Miralem Pjanic on the arm and the ball again went into the penalty spot. Ronaldo scored convincingly (1-1) in the 43rd minute.

Tete substitute at Lyon

After the break it seemed to go wrong for Lyon when Ronaldo also took care of the 2-1 after sixty minutes. He shot hard from a distance and that was his 130th goal ever in the Champions League.

Halfway through the second half, Memphis was replaced, while Juventus with Paulo Dybala as a substitute – he later retired – chased the third goal and with it a place in the last eight. Ronaldo shot hard again, but this time Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes had an answer.

In the final phase even keeper Szczesny went forward in the hope of 1-3, but Lyon held on. Kenny Tete also celebrated the party on the field with the French, after he came in in the first minute of extra time.
