Sagan gets the shivers from Van Aert: ‘he can get the green jersey’

Peter Sagan thinks Wout van Aert is a contender for the green jersey of the Tour de France. The Slovak is full of admiration at the recent masterpieces of Wout van Aert of Jumbo-Visma. Against Cyclingweekly he says it will be difficult to regain the green jersey.

Sagan has won that points jersey since 2012 up to and including last year, with only one exception in 2017, when he had to leave the Tour. World champion Sagan was then disqualified by the jury because of his action in the fourth stage to Vittel. He brought down fellow sprinter Mark Cavendish hard.

This year, the BORA-hansgrohe rider has decided to ride the Tour de France and Giro d’Italia. So no classics. “I can’t be everywhere,” said Sagan. He also says that Wout van Aert is one of the contenders for the green jersey this year, despite the Jumbo-Visma man going to work as a servant for top men such as Roglic and Dumoulin. When asked if Van Aert can challenge him for the green jersey, Sagan nods.

He adds that he has a challenger for this award every year. “Every year it gets harder to get the green jersey, but it is not impossible and I will try again,” said Sagan. Wout van Aert is currently wearing the green jersey in the Critérium de Dauphiné. (photo: Sirotti).
