1 augustus 2020 – Hitech driver Nikita Mazepin has his first victory in FIA Formula 2. The Russian won the main race in Silverstone ahead of Guanyu Zhou and Yuki Tsunoda.

Felipe Drugovich gave the Dutch MP Motorsport pole on Saturday, but was unable to use that privileged starting position. The Brazilian did not get away well at the start and was immediately swallowed by the competition. Mick Schumacher, who started third, took the lead, but the Prema driver was already overtaken by Stowe by Mazepin.

Mazepin and Schumacher both started on soft tires and therefore opted for an early pit stop. That also turned out to be the right strategy in Silverstone, because after the drivers’ pit stops on an alternative strategy, Mazepin had a significant lead, which he easily defended.

The Chinese Guanyu Zhou did manage to drive forward with his deviant strategy with a short late stint on fresh tires. He overtook Christian Lundgaard for second place and crossed the finish line five seconds behind winner Mazepin. Red Bull junior Tsunoda also overtook Lundgaard in the last round to take the third podium place.

Lundgaard was not the only one who struggled with tire wear in the last laps. Schumacher also fell completely through his slippers and was overtaken by several competitors in the last laps. Schumacher only finished ninth and therefore did not benefit from the reverse starting grid for the top eight for the sprint race.

Ilott made the reverse movement and drove all the way through the field. The Brit had qualified second, but had his engine stalled at the start of the formation lap. The UNI-Virtuosi driver had to leave the pit lane, but rolled up his sleeves and drove to fifth place.

Louis Deletraz was sixth ahead of Drugovich, DAMS man and Williams junior Dan Ticktum also took pole for Sunday’s sprint race in eighth place. After Schumacher, the second car from MP Motorsport took the last point with Nobuharu Matsushita

Championship leader Robert Shwartzman struggled just like in qualifying at Silverstone and finished outside the points at P14, bringing some tension back into the Formula 2 championship.
