Tire supplier Pirelli is looking for the cause of the punctures that gave the final phase of the Great Britain Prize an unexpected turn. Not only wear and tear may have played a role, but also junk on the Silverstone circuit.
Successively Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes), Carlos Sainz (McLaren) and Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) were hit in the last laps. Bottas dropped out of second place, which Max Verstappen then eagerly took. In the last lap, the Limburger went on a full hunt for Hamilton, who just passed the finish flag on three wheels.
“It is obvious to think that the tires were worn, because it would not be surprising after the drivers had driven more than 38 laps on the same tire. Still, I’m not saying this is the cause, “said Pirelli boss Mario Isola on the Formula 1 website.” It may also have been clutter on the track. For example, there were fragments of the broken front wing of Kimi Räikkönen’s car on the track. We want to investigate that. ”
To make a good analysis, Pirelli will investigate not only the punctured tires, but all the tires used in the race slot. “We have the opportunity to perform analyzes in our own lab on the track. We don’t have much time, because next weekend is already the second race at Silverstone, so I want to clarify quickly, “said Isola.
Pirelli’s boss had already seen that the tire wear was unprecedented. “I saw that the tire of Romain Grosjean, who waited a long time before his first pit stop, until the thread was worn out. And also from other tires I could see that they were completely used up. Obviously, a worn tire is less protective and even a small piece of debris can damage the tire. ”
It also went wrong at Valtteri Bottas.
