Patrick Lefevere has no problems with the much discussed victory gesture of Remco Evenepoel in the Tour of Burgos. That says the team manager of Deceuninck-Quick Step in his weekly column The newspapaer.
Van Lefevere does not need such a triumph. “But this is a new generation. Eddy Merckx or Johan Museeuw refrained from making big statements because they feared that the accident would bring. The Remco generation is not afraid of big statements. The consequence of course is that many are now waiting for him to flip over. ”
The team boss had already been informed by his rider that he was thinking about what he would do. “He had three months to do it. You can interpret his gesture in different ways. For example, that after three months without racing, he has removed the dust from his sweater. Others see it as if he wiped out the competitors. ”
Lefevere has already received several messages from people who wondered whether that triumph was necessary. “Honestly, I have no problem with it. That he is now labeled as a favorite for the Giro does not bother me either. I don’t slow him down in his enthusiasm. Remco always does more than what we expect from him. ”
