One season and enough: Fulham are back in the Premier League

The championship season came tonight (Tuesday) to the boiling point at Wembley Stadium, with Fulham beating Brentford 1-2 in the London derby, which was decided at the end of 120 minutes. The Cottages have joined Leeds West Bromwich Albion who have already qualified for the Premier League.

The game did not rise to a high level as both teams barely got into situations. The Cottagers, who were marked as one of the main candidates to return to the Premier League, opened the extra time a little better and in the 105th minute came the moment that decided the match. Left-back Joe Brian went for a free-kick from 35 yards out and instead of finding the head of the league’s king of goals – Alexander Mitrovic (26 goals as well as Olly Watkins) Englishman took advantage of David Raya’s poor standing and found the net. In the 117th minute Brian closed the story closely after a great double with Mitrovic. Henrik Delsgaard only shrank in the last minute of the game.

Fulham have returned to the Premier League after just one season and will try to put a stake as they did in the not-too-distant past playing in the Premier League for 13 consecutive seasons (01-14). The last time Brentford played in the Premier League was in 1947 and for a moment it seemed like it was happening after the small team recorded eight wins in a row. Frank’s gang also had a chance to step up at the end of the regular season but the team screwed up in the moment of truth and lost to Stoke.

As you may recall, at the end of 46 rounds Brentford and Fulham were ranked third and fourth in the table with 81 points, with only a goal difference separating the two. In the playoff semifinals, Scott Parker’s team beat Cardiff 2: 3 in the sum of the two encounters while Thomas Frank’s teammates defeated Swansea 2: 3 in the sum of the two games.
