‘No brain injury Jakobsen, stable state’

In the Polish hospital where the Dutch cyclist Fabio Jakobsen was admitted after his crash in the Tour of Poland, there is cautious optimism about the condition of the Dutchman.

Polish media report based on statements from doctors that he probably does not have a brain injury and that no vital organs have been seriously damaged. His condition is called stable.

There is not much certainty yet. “Maybe we can make a better diagnosis tomorrow, also in the neurological field. We have to wait a while. The next few hours are important, “said the hospital director. He said that Jakobsen will have to undergo facial surgery. Earlier, a round-the-clock physician indicated that Jakobsen’s condition is life-threatening. That was before he could be examined extensively in the hospital.

Deceuninck – Quick-Step, the Belgian team from Jakobsen, said in a statement: ‘Our prayers and thoughts are with Fabio. We thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts for all the compassion. We’ll let you know as soon as more is known about Fabio. ‘ The team did not provide any further information about the rider’s health.

Both the Tour of Poland and the UCI International Cycling Union have now designated Dylan Groenewegen as the culprit for the crash. The stage win was taken from him and he was kicked out of the race, the UCI is investigating. Jumbo-Visma, the Dutchman’s team, has apologized in the meantime.

Several riders and an official were involved in the crash. Groenewegen also got out of balance and fell across the finish line. Most riders involved in the incident have also been to the hospital, as far as is known their situation is not a cause for concern.

The incident provoked many angry and emotional reactions. Team boss Patrick Lefevere from Deceuninck – Quick-Step took the hardest hit at Groenewegen. “This man has to go to prison. I go to court. This type of criminal behavior should no longer occur in the peloton. ‘
