Nintendo reported remarkably high quarterly figures for the period April through June. This is mainly due to good sales of the Nintendo Switch console and the game Animal Crossing: New Horizons.
Nintendo sold more than ten million copies in the past quarter Animal Crossing: New Horizons. A total of 22.4 million units of the game have now been sold. Of all Nintendo Switch games so far alone Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (26.7 million copies) sold more often.
The number of Nintendo Switch consoles sold increased by 166 percent in the past quarter compared to the same period last year. 5.7 million copies were sold in the past three months, bringing the total to 61.4 million.
This brings Nintendo close to the sales of the original Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), of which 61.9 million have been sold.
Nintendo recorded a particularly good second quarter, which is usually fairly quiet. Operating profit increased by 428 percent compared to last year to EUR 1.16 billion. That was almost double what analysts expected in advance.
