The first stunt of the 2020-2021 season of the Jupiler Pro League is already a fact. On the opening matchday, Club Brugge was surprised by Sporting Charleroi. Club Brugge lost 0-1 at home. A blunder by Brandon Mechele was the basis for Ryota Morioka’s goal.

After the lost cup final, Club Brugge had something to put right. Normally it would now say ‘for own audience’. But as everyone knows, the corona crisis means that every fan has to follow the match at home. After the 1-0 defeat against Antwerp, Clement intervened. Charles De Ketelaere and David Okereke were the victims of duty. Emannuel Dennis and Youssouph Badji joined the team. At Charleroi, Guillaume Gillet returned to the Belgian fields.

No creativity
The Bruges fans expect a lot from Badji, but the young Senegalese could not convince on his debut. After just five minutes, Badji was able to open the score, but he did not stay cool enough and decided on Nicolas Penneteau. Afterwards Badji won a few more duels, but his candle went out too quickly. Club Brugge was clearly boss in the first half, but it lacked creativity. Everything happened through the right. The left flank was almost completely forgotten. Blauw-Zwart had three or four chances before half-time, but there was no goal.

Charleroi opted for the Antwerp technique. Have Club Brugge come and count on the counter. However, the Zebras forgot the second part of that plan. Only in the 43rd minute could Charleroi be threatening for the first time. It paid off. Making the 0-0 half time more than logical in the Jan Breydel Stadium.

Mechele de Varane from Club Brugge
In the second half we got to see the same game image. Club Brugge tried, but did not get through. Charleroi waited very patiently for her chance. In the 78th minute suddenly the lights went out with Mechele. The defender of Club Brugge served the Raphaël Varane. He played the ball straight into the feet of Morioka. The Japanese took full advantage. He went off or Mignolet, held off his opponent and kicked Charleroi, which had a little more chances in the second half, in the lead.

After Charleroi’s 0-1, Club Brugge tried to go for the equalizer. But the manko from before the opening goal remained. Club Brugge lacked creativity. Substitutes Schrijvers and De Ketelaere still had the chance to make it 1-1, but decided over and wide. Without fans, Club Brugge didn’t get a final push. For example, Club Brugge suffered its first defeat of the season on the opening matchday. Last season Club Brugge only lost at home once. Talk about a false start.
