Orlando City has qualified for the semi-finals of the MLS is Back Tournament. The Oscar Pareja team was too strong for Los Angeles FC in the quarterfinals of the tournament, despite the efforts of Kenneth Vermeer. After a 1-1 score in regular time, Orlando City pulled the longest end in the necessary penalty shootout.
The elimination is a hard one for Los Angeles FC, where Vermeer played an important role. After just under an hour of play, Diego Palacios made a foul on Ruan on the right side of the penalty area, and hit the ball. However, Vermeer guessed Nani’s intentions, a shot to the left corner, and that was a pivotal moment, it turned out minutes later.
The first shot on goal from Los Angeles FC after sixty minutes of play was immediately hit. After good action by Diego Rossi against Sebastián Méndez, Bradley Wright-Phillips tapped the ball from close range: 0-1. The lead could not be maintained until the last whistle: just before time, Joao Moutinho headed in the equalizer from a corner by Nani.
In the penalty shootout, Vermeer had to remain guilty of the answer to each of the five penalties. Jordan Harvey’s bet hit the crossbar, then Nani took the fifth and didn’t fail Vermeer face to face. Minnesota United or San José Earthquakes is the semi-finals opponent. In the other semi-final, Philadelphia Union awaits the winner of the game between New York City FC and Portland Timbers.
The winner of the final, which will be held on August 11, will obtain a ticket to the CONCACAF Champions League in 2021. All group stage matches will count towards the regular Major League Soccer season. It is not yet known when that can be resumed, but the MLS is working on a new post-tournament schedule in Orlando that will allow games to be played the ‘old-fashioned’ way.
