According to the first reports, fatalities mainly occurred among the civilian population. There were also about 25 injured. However, the balance can increase as the fighting is still going on. Several detainees are said to have escaped from prison.
Islamic State (IS) has meanwhile claimed responsibility for the attack. The terror organization did so through its news agency Amaq. Nangarhar province, of which Jalalabad is the capital, used to be considered a stronghold of IS.
The Taliban declined any responsibility for the attack. After all, there is a ceasefire in force between the government and the radical Islamic movement. The parties had agreed not to fight for three days because of the Islamic Festival of Sacrifice.
