The warm weather has made the glacier unstable. According to experts monitoring the mountain, a piece of about 500,000 cubic meters could give way.

Workaround

The authorities in the Aosta Valley region have therefore evacuated around 65 people. Among them are fifty tourists. Access roads are closed.

“We are looking for temporary solutions for the residents. The tourists will have to find another accommodation themselves,” the mayor of Courmayeur told the Italian news agency Ansa.

Planponteux glacier

Mont Blanc is the highest mountain in Europe. The summit is partly in France and Italy. The fragile piece of ice is part of the Planpublux Glacier. If it breaks down, parts of it could reach public roads within two minutes.

Residents also had to leave their homes temporarily in September due to danger from the glacier. According to experts, temperature changes cause major changes in the condition of the ice.

To melt

The glacier has been under close scrutiny since 2013 to see how hard the ice is melting. If greenhouse gas emissions continue unabated, climate scientists say half of the ice on the Alpine glaciers will have melted by 2050.
