Monique Smit opens up about heavy maternity time: ‘I thought: is this it?’ | NOW

Five years after giving birth to her son Noah, Monique Smit opens a book about the heavy maternity period in the podcast Podnataal by radio maker Simone Wijnands.

Although the birth of the 31-year-old Volendam went quite smoothly, the time after the birth of her son was very intense. “After the delivery I got attached and something went wrong. It bothered me for a long time.”

Breastfeeding also did not work for Smit. “I really wanted this because I thought it had to be part of it.” Due to the breastfeeding problems, she developed inflammation. “At one point I had inflammation from above and below. I did think: is this it? I was not on a pink cloud, but on a dark gray. I felt like I was failing.”

“Everyone always says: you are in love right away. Although I loved looking at the cradle all day, it took me a while and I was ashamed of that for a long time.”
