Mathieu van der Poel has yet responded to his performance in Milan-San Remo. The Dutchman from Alpecin-Fenix looks back with mixed feelings on his debut in the Italian classic, in which he finished thirteenth.
Van der Poel says he did not jump along with Wout van Aert and Julian Alaphilippe because he was betting on a final sprint. “I really enjoyed my first Milan-San Remo. It is without a doubt a great match. The goal was to run from ahead of the Poggio, and they succeeded. I think we as a team rode the perfect race up to the Poggio. ”“The two best (Wout van Aert and Julian Alaphilippe, ed.) Were at the front, I expected that everything would come together for the sprint as the gap at the top of the Poggio was small and there were still a few strong names in the chasing group. In the sprint for third place, I got a bit trapped after that. ”
“Although it was not the result I had hoped for, I still have the feeling that it is on the rise. Now Gran Piemonte on Wednesday, although I have not yet looked at the course extensively, I hope to play at the front. ”
