If Quique Setién gets his congé at Barcelona at the end of the season, Mauricio Pochettino is Daily Mail the main candidate to take over the baton. The 48-year-old Argentinian coach has been without a club since leaving Tottenham Hotspur. A possible appointment of Pochettino at Barcelona would be spicy, because he said in the past that he never wanted to work for the Catalans.
Pochettino spent much of his career with Espanyol. As a player, the Argentinian was active at the club from Barcelona between 1994 and 2001 and between 2004 and 2006. In 2006 he ended his career at Espanyol, before returning to the RCDE Stadium in 2009 as a trainer. Pochettino worked for his longtime love until 2012, after which he ended up at Tottenham Hotspur via Southampton. Since he the Spurs in November 2019, he is without a club.
His name has been mentioned at Barcelona for a while. Pochettino would also have been a candidate after Ernesto Valverde left in January of this year. However, the Catalans partnered with Setién, who has a contract until mid-2022. Lately there has been speculation about the position of the 61-year-old coach more than once, as he is charged that Barcelona had to leave the championship to Real Madrid. It is suggested that Setién can take his back if Barcelona fails to win the Champions League. The Catalans must first of all survive the return in the eighth final against Napoli.
If Setién gets fired, Pochettino’s name would be at the top of the wish list. He once said that he would rather work on a farm in Argentina than become a trainer at the Camp Nou, although he recently weakened that statement in an interview with The country somewhat by stating that he should not have made such a statement and ‘you never know what happens’. For the possible follow-up of Setién, the names of, among others, Xavi and Ronald Koeman were mentioned. If Pochettino actually takes over the baton from Setién this summer, there will certainly be no reunion with Espanyol next season in LaLiga. The club from Barcelona relegated in the past year.
