Anyone who does not wear a face mask in certain parts of Amsterdam from Wednesday risks a fine of 95 euros. The obligation to wear a face mask for everyone aged thirteen and older applies to five busy places in the city center, such as the Red Light District, Kalverstraat and Albert Cuypstraat. The new measure will take effect on Wednesday at 9 a.m. and will last for four weeks.

On the Red Light District, Kalverstraat and Nieuwendijk, visitors must wear a face mask day and night, both in shops and on the street. In the markets on Albert Cuypstraat and Plein ’40 -’45, the obligation applies during market times. More areas may be added.

According to the safety region, wearing a non-medical mask, both on the street and in shops, is necessary in places where it is tight and busy and where other measures do not work sufficiently or lead to undesired economic effects. The obligation does not replace the rule of keeping 1.5 meters away.

Also in Rotterdam from Wednesday between 6 am and 10 pm a mouth mask is mandatory in a number of areas in the city, including the Coolsingel, Lijnbaan and the covered shopping centers Alexandrium and Zuidplein. The amount of the fine has not yet been announced.

Professor of law and society Jan Brouwer of the University of Groningen said last week that mayors are legally not allowed to introduce mask protection in their city or region. He does not expect this to hold up in court, as there is not yet a special corona law for such a duty.
