Björn Kuipers and Danny Makkelie have been assigned games in the eighth finals of the Europa League this week. Kuipers will take charge of Sevilla-AS Roma and Makkelie has been appointed by UEFA to meet between Bayer Leverkusen and Rangers FC.
The original diptych between Seville and AS Roma will be completed in just one game. The first leg earlier this year was canceled due to the corona crisis and given the full game schedule, UEFA decided to let the meeting decide on one game. The same applies to Internazionale-Getafe.
Both games are played in Germany, so the clubs have no home advantage. Kuipers is assisted in Duisburg by Sander van Roekel and Erwin Zeinstra. Serdar Gözübüyük is the fourth official and Pol van Boekel acts as VAR, aided by Dennis Higler.
The return between Bayer Leverkusen and Rangers is simply played in the stadium of Leverkusen. The team of trainer Peter Bosz won the first game with the Scots (1-3) in March and therefore has a good starting position.
Makkelie is supported in the BayArena by assistants Mario Diks and Hessel Steegstra. Bas Nijhuis is the fourth official and Jochem Kamphuis takes the honors as video referee. Kevin Blom is the so-called AVAR.
Kuipers and Makkelie recently whistled games in Greece to gain rhythm for the remainder of the Champions League and Europa League. The two European club tournaments will be completed in tournament form this month. Kuipers was also in charge of the FC Utrecht-AZ exhibition game on Saturday.
