Is Alaphilippe also the best in the Strade Bianche this year?

Julian Alaphilippe immediately hit Strade Bianche last year. Whether it is going so fast? The Frenchman shrugged his shoulders. “It is different from last year when I made the Italian block with the Strade Bianche, Tirreno-Adriatico and Milan-Sanremo the first goal of the season. I had then prepared via Argentina and Colombia. Now it is different. It is a test to know how far you are from the rest. I dare not claim that my shape is already great, but the intention is that my condition will continue to grow through Milan-Sanremo, the Critérium du Dauphiné to the Tour and the autumn classics. I hear everyone say it can be any race as if it were the last one, okay, but I hope public health improves and we can continue racing. ”

Heat determining factor

“For me, this is not only the first race since the lockdown, but in addition, they are announcing 40 degrees before Saturday afternoon. That will have an impact on the course that will explode anyway, because everyone is impatient to finally race again. The heat makes the Strade Bianche more difficult than in March last year. Every effort you make can weigh more heavily. But bon, it’s the same for everyone. The roads are also slightly harder. It will be incredibly dusty and thirsty, but we have developed a strategy with the team so that we can be supplied as much as possible. ”

Alaphilippe hopes that he or a colleague from Deceuninck – Quick-Step will continue the positive vibe that Remco Evenepoel used in Burgos. “I am not surprised by what Remco does. This was answering with the pedals. I already knew from the training camp in San Pellegrino that some of our boys, including Remco, are in fantastic shape. I myself see in the Strade where I end up. I am very happy that I can finally race. I finally feel that adrenaline again, that nervousness, that group atmosphere in the team that I had to miss for so long because of the lockdown. ” (hc)
