They were not best friends, José Mourinho and Iker Casillas. The Portuguese had the recently retired goalkeeper under his wing during his time with Real Madrid. Mourinho briefly returned to his troubled relationship with the Spaniard, whom he still dares to consider as a friend.

Mourinho was on the sidelines in Bernabeu between 2010 and 2013. There, Casillas was not always the first choice of the current Tottenham coach. The Spaniard was already on his way back to the Royal and several times he had to give his place under the bar to Diego Lopez. Mourinho also clashed openly with Sergio Ramos before exchanging the Spanish capital for Chelsea.

“His intelligence and maturity ensured that there was always mutual respect,” Mourinho told the Spanish AS. “Years later I would even speak of a genuine friendship.”

“Casillas is a keeper of the history books. Both for Real Madrid, the Spanish national team and world football. A great goalkeeper and a great man ”, he still praised.

Iker Casillas announced his retirement from international professional football on Tuesday, after a career spanning 22 years.
