Jakob Fuglsang (35) has added a second monument to his honors list with the Tour of Lombardy. The Dane from Astana was the best man in the competition and arrived solo in Como. George Bennett was 2nd, Aleksandr Vlasov, Fuglsang’s teammate, 3rd. Top favorite Remco Evenepoel crashed heavily in a descent and was taken to hospital.
Tour of Lombardy in a nutshell
- Key moments: In the dangerous descent of the Sormano, Evenepoel falls away and the gate swings open for the shadow favorites. On the Civiglio, Trek’s tactics explode and Astana takes over.
- Winner of the day: Jakob Fuglsang was supported by a strong team with the young Vlasov as a lieutenant well into the final. The Dane was very strong and completed Astana’s plan perfectly.
- Loser of the day: Remco Evenepoel saw his first chance to win a monument go up in smoke, but hopefully will be able to show his enormous talent to the world in the future.
- Loser of the day (bis): Trek-Segafredo could not exploit its numerical superiority. After the Civiglio, saving was what could be saved, but shifting problems at Mollema meant the definitive end.
First escapees make a tough opening
A minute’s silence was held before the start in Bergamo, badly affected by the corona virus. It was soon forgotten, because war was going on for an hour to get away. Joey Rosskopf tried in vain on his own, but a second attempt with ten others was more likely to succeed.
The eleven escapees, with Vakoc as the most striking name, did not get too much space from the peloton. With a maximum lead of 4’30 “they were allowed to ride over the Colle Gallo and the Colle Brianza. In the peloton, Deceuninck-QuickStep and Jumbo-Visma divided the work in the service of leaders Evenepoel and Bennett. On the flanks of the Madonna del Ghisallo it was story of the flight ended The Canadian Piccoli was arrested last.
Top favorite Evenepoel ends up in the abyss
Devenyns imposed a disparaging pace and threw a lot of men overboard. With Evenepoel in his wake, he also took care of the run-up of the Sormano. On the dreaded Muro di Sormano, the favorites finally fully surfaced and the masks fell off.
At the top, Evenepoel, Bennett, Nibali, Fuglsang and Vlasov had made a gap. The stubborn Mollema, last year’s winner, refused to burst and joined Ciccone. In the treacherous descent of the Sormano things went completely wrong for Evenepoel. The great Belgian cycling hope hit a wall and collapsed into a ravine. Fortunately, the first reports would show that his injuries were not too bad.
Astana and Fuglsang seize power
In the meantime, the race just rumbled on and a fascinating joust unfolded. The Trek trio (Nibali, Mollema and Ciccone) battled the Astana duo (Fuglsang and Vlasov) while Bennett had to manage alone. After a crazy chase, Van der Poel stranded a stone’s throw from that leading group.
The ascent of the Civiglio meant the downfall for Trek-Segafredo, which lost all its pawns there. Bennett was now in Astana’s pliers, but would not be fooled. The New Zealander tried to get away on the San Fermo della Battaglia. However, he ran on a direct counterfeit from Fuglsang, who drove to his second monument in the descent. Last year he already won Liège-Bastogne-Liège.
Fuglsang: “Knew I had a good chance today”
George Bennett had to be content with second place. “Winner in the Gran Piemonte and now second, had you told me that at the beginning of the week, I would have been very satisfied with it, but today I feel disappointed. It felt like I could win today. I knew that Fuglsang was faster in the sprint, so I wanted to run it loose, but I drove myself. ”
