Jade Smits sharpened the Belgian record for the 50 meters backstroke at the Dutch Hengelo Long Course Challenge on Friday. The 19-year-old Smits swam 28.77 on the tables in the preliminary round series, and is doing better than the 29.09 that was in the hands of Kimberly Buys since 2013. Roos Vanotterdijk (15) also surprised everyone in the 100 meter butterfly stroke.

The top time gave Smits the third place in her preliminary round. Home swimmer Maaike de Waard (27.86) took first place, ahead of her compatriot Kira Toussaint (28.02). The final is scheduled for Friday just before 6 pm.

Smits, with her 28.77 de 29.09 of Kimberly Buys, swims firmly from the tables, which she set up in May 2013 in Antwerp. The five last Belgian records on the distance were always in Buys’s name.

Vanotterdijk opens mouths on the 100 meter butterfly stroke

Another young Belgian talent is also in great shape in Hengelo. Roos Vanotterdijk, barely 15, just beat Ranomi Kromowidjojo in the 100 meter butterfly stroke. The Dutch is a three-time Olympic champion and multiple European and world champion. Still, she had to bite into the sand opposite Vanotterdijk, who swam to a time of 58.30.
