Is it useful? –

We miss out on a lot of fads on social media, but this is a very big one: under the hashtag #challengeaccepted 6.5 million photos have now appeared on Instagram, mainly of women and in black and white.

The hashtag has been around since 2016. It is not entirely clear who has given it new life. It is believed that Turkish women have started sharing black and white selfies to draw attention to the increasing number of female murders in their country. The murder of 27-year-old student Pinar Gültekin last month is said to be the direct reason for the call to share a black and white selfie.

A video by American politician and activist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez may have caused the hashtag to take off. In the video she talks about the repeated sexist behavior of her colleagues. She was called a ‘fucking bitch’ by a male politician.

In general, the hashtag matches the women empowermentmovement that has been going on on social media for a while. The black and white snapshots are often supplemented with #womensupportwomen. But because of its generality, the message also loses meaning in critics’ opinion.

“Instagrammers just take over from each other. Many people post the photos purely from vanity, ”Instagram expert Cato Duyvis told Editie NL. “It has spread to the Western world and now it has just become ‘women supporting women’.”

She regrets that. “It is my heart that because of the volatility of social media you have the background of the challenge fog. People have to think: why am I posting this? The whole need is lost. ”

Turkish-Dutch Dila Nurtas agrees with her. “The hashtag has been hijacked by white women. The attention for Turkish women and LGBT women in Turkey is underexposed, “she says. She therefore does not participate in the challenge.

Meanwhile, half-female Hollywood has shared a black and white selfie.
