Ineos is thus bringing three ex-winners of the Tour de France to the start. Froome won the Dauphiné in 2015 and 2016. Thomas was the best in 2018. Bernal finished second in the Tour de l’Ain on Sunday, behind Primoz Roglic of major competitor Jumbo-Visma.
Ineos also calls on Dylan van Baarle, Jonathan Castroviejo, Michal Kwiatkowski and Pavel Sivakov.
Bakelants leads Circus-Wanty Gobert-Tormans
On Wednesday, the Critérium du Dauphiné starts with a ride that starts in Clermont-Ferrand. Circus-Wanty Gobert-Tormans has selected a core of climbers for this mountainous race, which ends in the Alps on Sunday. Jan Bakelants is the road captain of the Belgian team. Wanty also counts on Jérémy Bellicaud, Thomas Degand, Fabien Doubey, Alexander Evans, Quinten Hermans and Xandro Meurisse.
Kopman Bakelants believes in the chances of the team. “This edition of the Dauphiné is very exhausting, there is not the slightest transition stage”, he looks ahead. “It will be a good preparation for the whole team for the rest of the season. The level of the climbers is very high, so it becomes difficult to show us in the high mountains. So we have to take advantage of the first ride to Saint-Christo-en-Jarez, which suits me very well, to highlight ourselves. Because collectively we have several assets to play on this hilly terrain. ”
“This race is usually the last preparation for the Tour de France, so the level will be very high, even more than in other years,” predicts sports director Hilaire Van der Schueren. “In the high mountains, we have to try to use the opportunities that arise by anticipating and showing ourselves. The first stage is on paper the one that suits us best, in the low mountains, so we have to attack and animate the race. ”
Last year, the Dane Jakob Fuglsang won the final classification in the Dauphiné.
