‘I immediately felt that there was something wrong with the engine’

Michael van der Mark started the second day of the Pirelli Spanish Round on Saturday morning in Jerez. The Dutchman seemed ready for the podium after the third free practice and the Superpole qualification. Unfortunately, it all turned out slightly differently when a technical problem caused his race to end early.

Michael van der Mark said on Friday after the first day in Jerez that he had to find a few tenths of a second to be able to compete for a podium position on Saturday during the first WorldSBK race of the Pirelli Spanish Round.

Saturday morning Van der Mark and his Pata Yamaha WorldSBK Official Team crew seemed to have found it. In the third free practice, Van der Mark recorded the fastest lap time of the session. Also during the Superpole qualification, the Yamaha rider stood his ground. Although this is not normally the strongest point of the Dutchman, he managed to qualify in a neat fourth place for the Saturday afternoon first round of the weekend.

Van der Mark was therefore looking forward to a good result. Unfortunately this turned out very differently, as we saw the Dutchman drop a number of places at the beginning of the race and he fell back to eighth and later even ninth position. Not des Van der Mark’s, but not much later the cause surfaced. In the eighth lap of the race, the Yamaha quit and there was nothing for the 2014 World Supersport world champion to put his machine against the guardrail.

Michael van der Mark (DNF): “This morning and also in the Superpole qualifying I had a good feeling on the bike, because we had improved my R1 a lot from the first day. But immediately in the race I missed top speed. I felt something was wrong and unfortunately we ended up with a technical problem. Fortunately we have another chance on Sunday. We can improve on a number of points, including when braking, and I am confident in a good result. ”

Sunday in Jerez for Van der Mark both the Tissot Superpole race and Race 2 are on the program.
