Honored Wiegman explains departure: ‘They have taken very big steps there’

Sarina Wiegman explains in conversation with the KNVB why she is exchanging the Orange Lionesses for the English women’s team. The fifty-year-old success coach sees that The Three Lionesses develop strongly in recent years.

“I am very honored that I can become the national coach of England. That is of course the cradle of football”, Wiegman said in conversation with the KNVB. “They have made great strides there in recent years. Everyone who is a little familiar with women’s football knows that. I hope that after the Olympics I can contribute to that, continue to build and perform with the team.”

Wiegman started working for the Oranje Leeuwinnen in 2014, first as an assistant and from 2017 as national coach. “We have had great years with the European Championship 2017 and the World Cup 2019. But we are not ready yet. We want to qualify for the European Championship next year. And of course perform at the Olympic Games. I hope we can do in style. I will at least do everything about it. ”
