Silverstone is not only Lewis Hamilton’s home track but also where he has won four times and taken pole four times over the past five years. The Brit ended the opening day this time only as fifth.
It is of course not until Friday and it was also a lot warmer than it will be during the weekend, but at the end of his first working day at Silverstone Hamilton is not very happy with how it went – and how his Mercedes W11 did .
“The balance was wrong,” Hamilton continues Motorsport-Total quoted, with the reigning world champion who indeed missed an apex several times and was caught in other messy moments on the track he knows so well.

“It was a hard day to be honest,” he summarizes. “It was not a disaster, but it was certainly a difficult day,” says Hamilton, whose teammate Valtteri Bottas (third in VT2) Formula1.com says that Mercedes ‘can squeeze even more’.
Bottas: “It was especially difficult in the first training tricky in terms of balance. We still have some work to do. However, it didn’t feel wrong in VT2. The differences are quite small. Normally, however, we still take good steps for qualifying. ”
Bottas doesn’t worry too much though Racing Point and Red Bull seem to be quite strong. “After all, the weekend gets a lot cooler and the wind turns.” Whether that is an advantage? “No idea.” But: “I am hopeful. So we still have some work to do, but the car feels good. ”
