The coronavirus affects different people in different ways. Hence, the list of symptoms does not seem to stop.

There does not seem to be an end to reporting symptoms of Covid-19. After coughing, headache, fever, fatigue, shortness of breath, diarrhea, skin and brain disorders, hair and hearing loss may also occur.

There seems to be no end to the reporting of symptoms of covid-19. After coughing, headache, fever, fatigue, shortness of breath, diarrhea, skin and brain disorders, hair and hearing loss may also occur. In April, a first case of hearing loss was reported in an elderly lady infected with SARS-CoV-2 in Thailand. But also young people, who previously had no hearing problems, suddenly have to deal with the condition. For example, an Iranian study in six patients between the ages of 22 and 40 with mild symptoms such as fever, cough and breathing problems showed that there were also hearing problems. Four people had tinnitus, two experienced vertigo or vertigo (caused by an imbalance in the ear). They all suffered from impaired hearing in one of the two ears. It has not yet been possible to determine how long the condition will persist. Experts suspect that the virus enters the brain via blood cells, where the temporal lobe, which is responsible for hearing, contains many ACE2 receptors. That is the protein that SARS-CoV-2 uses to invade healthy cells. When the virus attacks this area, cytokines are produced, which in turn affect the brain’s auditory center. Indeed, brain scans have already shown neurological damage in the temporal lobe and brainstem of covid patients, but the virus also strikes in the ear itself. An investigation shows that the virus in the cochlea in the inner ear, which contains thousands of hair cells, causes damage. The organ is responsible for converting sound waves into neural signals that are interpreted in the brain. In an autopsy study in deceased covid patients, genetic material of SARS-CoV-2 was found in the middle ear and the mastoid in 2 out of 3 deaths, but most drugs used in corona treatment are also ototoxic (harmful to the ear). ). These are hydroxychloroquine, chloroquine, remdesivir, azithromycin, favipiravir and lopinavir. Ototoxicity is poisoning of the inner ear due to chemical products and can lead to balance problems, hearing loss and tinnitus. The effects are reversible or not and occur after several weeks of regular administration. Another story is the growing number of patients who experience exceptional hair loss after a corona infection. While this could also be a result of the virus, experts have another possible explanation. It may be telogen hair loss caused by mental or physical trauma such as a serious illness, high fever or depression. When the body experiences a stressful situation, it diverts energy from hair growth to more essentials. Patients can lose up to half their hair. The condition occurs about three months after the trauma and is temporary. After that, hair growth will recover. Whether this is also the case for corona patients is not yet clear.
