Groenewegen disqualified for causing bizarre fall of Jakobsen in Poland NOW

Dylan Groenewegen was disqualified on Wednesday for causing the bizarre crash in the opening stage of the Tour of Poland. He deviated from his line in the bunch sprint, so Fabio Jakobsen flew full into the crush barriers.

Groenewegen started the sprint downhill from far and had Jakobsen in his wheel. The Dutch champion wanted to pass his fellow countryman on the right, but the rider of Jumbo-Visma also went further and further to the right.

As a result, Jakobsen was catapulted into the crush barriers and banged full on a photographer. Jakobsen is in mortal danger, according to the doctor of the Tour of Poland. He is said to be suffering from a serious brain injury.

Groenewegen and a few other riders also fell. The Dutchman slipped first over the finish, but was disqualified by the Tour of Poland an hour after the end of the stage.

The organization of the Tour of Poland has provisionally designated Jakobsen as the winner of the stage, even though he ended up in the crush barriers. Frenchman Marc Sarreau finished second behind Groenewegen.

The Tour of Poland is the first stage race in the WorldTour since the corona crisis. The competition has a total of five stages and lasts until Sunday.
