The approximately five million people of Melbourne are now only allowed to go outside for essential tasks such as groceries, care and to go to work. Under the new measures, Australian media say they will have to stay within three miles of their home from Wednesday and only one person per household will be allowed to run errands. The restrictions will last for at least six weeks.
The number of new infections has increased in Melbourne in recent days, despite the previously implemented lockdown measures. Record numbers of new infections were reported last week. According to ABC News, 650 cases were added on Sunday, up from 397 on Saturday.
Corona measures are also expected to be tightened this week in the rest of Victoria, but in a less stringent manner than in Melbourne. Face masks have been in effect statewide throughout the state since Sunday.
